Buying steel tip darts – what actually matters?
Before you press a buy button, look at the dart you use now. Where do your thumb and index finger land? What weight do you throw? Do you hold the barrel at the front, middle or rear? Those three answers remove plenty of unsuitable darts straight away.
- Weight: Stay close to what you already know. If this is your first proper set, 23g or 24g is a sensible place to begin.
- Grip: Look at the exact position of the grooves. A sharp rear grip does nothing for a front gripper.
- Barrel shape: A straight barrel leaves you more room to move your fingers. A shaped barrel works better when your hand lands in the same place each time.
- Tungsten: 80%, 90% or 97% mainly changes how slim the barrel can be. The biggest number is not automatically the best dart.

Swiss Point – what does it actually do?
On a compatible Target barrel, you loosen the point with the small tool and screw in another Swiss Point. That helps when a point breaks or when you want to try another length.
- You need Target Swiss Points: ordinary press-fit steel points do not screw into the barrel.
- The tool is part of the system: use it to remove and tighten the point.
- The barrel stays the same: changing the point does not move the grooves under your fingers.
Do not buy Swiss Point just because it sounds clever. It earns its keep when you actually plan to change points.

How much grip should a dart barrel have?
Do not judge grip by how fierce the cuts look in a photograph. Look at the section under your fingers. If the dart hangs on your thumb or index finger, the grip there may be too sharp. If you keep moving your fingers between throws, you may need more grip at that point.
Straight, torpedo or bomb barrel?
You can hold a straight barrel at the front, middle or rear. A torpedo or bomb barrel leads your fingers towards a smaller area. That can help when you already grip in the same place. If your hand lands somewhere else, you end up fighting the shape.
Are 90% or 97% tungsten darts better?
Tungsten is dense, so a higher percentage lets a maker build a slimmer barrel at the same weight. That is the useful part. The highest percentage does not win by itself. An 80% barrel that leaves your hand properly is more useful than a 97% barrel that catches your fingers.
